I would like to thank the Targeting Excellence organization and all their affiliates for the opportunity to apply to this scholarship. This scholarship will help finance my graduate school education and make this experience unforgettable!

Hometown: Ames, IA

School: Iowa State University

Major / Species: Food Science and Technology

Career Goals: Throughout my life I have been involved in the dairy industry, whether that be in milk production or processing. I grew up on a family dairy farm in Stanley, Wisconsin and this experience lead me to be interested in the science of milk production and processing. After graduating high school I enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, where I majored in Food Science and Technology. During this time my knowledge of milk production and processing was expanded. Upon graduation I started working in the dairy industry at Grassland Dairy Products in research and development. I also continued to help on our family farm, which milks 70 dairy cows. These experiences made me interested in gaining more knowledge about milk production and processing. To accomplish this I decided to attend Iowa State University (ISU) to obtain my Master’s degree in Food Science and Technology. I started in the program in the fall of 2017 and will graduate in the spring of 2018. Once I graduate with my Master’s Degree from ISU I hope to use my cumulative knowledge on dairy production and processing to produce on-farm dairy products at our family dairy farm. The goal of this work is to add value to the milk that is being produced by the animal production side of the business. This business will combine my passion for milk production and processing into one business. In this business will use the knowledge I have gained growing up and working on dairy farms throughout my life for the production of milk. The knowledge I have gained while obtaining a Bachelors and Master’s degree and working in the dairy industry for four in a half years will be used to produce value added dairy products. The potential dairy products that will be produced in this business will be various types of yogurts and cheeses. This will be a local and sustainable business that will provide delicious dairy products to consumers!
