Growing up on a small family farm I have always been involved with raising show pigs for the county 4-H clubs. It was not until I went to college that I truly experienced mass production in the pork industry. I have enjoyed my college experience the past four years and I am reminded daily of all the reasons I am studying an expanding industry. During my time at Ohio State University, I have thoroughly enjoyed the courses available for swine production including swine feeding, non-ruminant nutrition, and swine production. These courses have further instilled my drive to continue my education in swine production and swine nutrition. Throughout my undergraduate education I have had the opportunity to learn production systems at Country View Family Farms, Shoup Brother’s Family Farms, and Heimerl Farms. It was not until Heimerl Farms that I would appreciate the complexity of swine nutrition. In May of 2019 is when I started working at the feed mill for Heimerl Farms and where I learned the operations of feed milling. From my experiences during this summer I was able to meet JBS United Animal Health’s consultants and learn more about the feed ingredients within swine diets. With a growing interest into nutrition and nearing an end to my undergraduate degree, I reached out to my advisors and professors. One of which, Dr. Steve Moeller, was able to connect me to numerous nutrition professors and researchers from around the country. Through Dr. Moeller, I was able to talk to professors involved with swine nutrition research. I am excited to continue my education at Kansas State University working with the swine nutrition graduate team and faculty members. I hope that the knowledge and experience I am able to obtain from this program will propel me into a satisfying career working in swine production. I hope to work for an integrated swine producer in their feed manufacturing division. I plan to never lose interest in the swine production industry. I hope that I am able to make a significant difference to an industry that has impacted me so greatly. Being granted this scholarship will help me achieve these goals by providing me the financial support throughout graduate school. I am fortunate to have paid for my undergraduate education and because of this I am pursuant of a Master’s Program. In the future at Kansas State I hope to be actively involved on campus and with various Midwestern swine producers. I plan to target excellence as a goal that may theoretically never be achievable but always within reach.
