Allison VanDerWal 2016 Scholarship Winner

Allison VanDerWal

Hometown: Sanborn, MN

School: University of Minnesota

Major / Species: Animal Science

Career Goals: In being raised and heavily involved on my families feedlot and crop farm in southwest Minnesota, I decided to major in Animal Science with an emphasis in Beef Production. I have always had a passion for cattle and have been my dad’s right hand girl when it came to anything related to the feedlot and cattle. I have always loved science and in 5th grade my parents encouraged me to enter in the Science Fair. Since my dad was a Ruminant nutritionist for many years growing up, my interest in cattle and my pen of 4-H calves, I chose a research project related to ruminant nutrition looking at the affect of water on cattle’s feed intake. That year I fell in love with research and decided at a very young age that I wanted to get my PhD so I could preform research as a career. Now, ten years later as a Junior in College working in the Beef Ruminant Nutrition lab and conducting my own study, I still have that goal of graduate school and PhD in mind.

As for career goals, I have many. I would still like to keep research in my career but have also found other interests I enjoy within beef production. I enjoy teaching and as a goal I would like to be a professor and graduate advisor of Ruminant Nutrition at a University. However, I also love talking and educating producers. Last summer and this next summer I will be interning for a feed company as their Beef intern. As a goal I would also like either work as a privet consultant or work for a feed company as a beef nutrition consultant.
With these possible Careers in mind, the most important goal I have is to be a creditable nutritionist and name in the beef industry. I want my work to help improve the industry I am so passionate about and make it continue to succeed.
