I would like to extend my gratitude and many thanks to all of the individuals who make the Targeting Excellence events and scholarships possible, year after year. I am very grateful to be a part of an industry where leaders motivate and believe in us, as students, to become the future, while being excited for that time to come. I appreciate all of the donors for their financial support that ultimately provides students with more opportunities. Lastly, I am very thankful to have been selected to receive a scholarship this year from Targeting Excellence and look forward to continuing to be involved with the program!
Throughout the years, my extensive involvement within the swine industry has given me exposure to many diverse career opportunities. Investing in my passion by pursing a Master’s degree in a swine related field has been my goal for many years. It is my intention to serve and give back to the swine industry and to continue promoting positive change and innovation for both the pigs and producers, worldwide. x000B
When considering a specific career path, I feel there are a few different things I would like to accomplish. I am most interested in the applied, or field side of the swine industry as well as the innovation and connection with producers. I plan to pursue a career that encompasses those three aspects is important to me.
My goals are to be in a position where I am able to address the needs and wants of consumers and producers directly, then innovate or work in specific areas to accomplish those requests in the best interest of the pig and finally, to then apply and market those ideas or products, not only in the Midwest, but globally.
I see an importance in moving producers forward in efficient and effective ways to adapt to changing policies and requests of various third-parties, but not forgetting about the sole purpose for in being involved in the industry, the individual pigs. I also see an importance in emphasizing the smaller things that can be done to save money and improve efficiency, and training individuals so that we are caring for our animals in the best ways on a day to day basis.
A career that allows the flexibility to be involved in all facets of the industry and on a wide scale geographically, is something that I am seeking, upon the completion of my education, along with a career that also leaves room for outreach and education of consumers, producers, and the youth of both categories.
Overall, I think that my greatest career goal is to consistently push the swine industry forward in a positive direction and to assist producers and consumers in critically thinking and understanding more clearly what is happening, what changes are coming, how we can approach these situations, and how we are able to work through those things, together. Being on the forefront of those concepts and the challenges of the industry, while actively shining a positive light on the swine industry as a whole is something that I am passionate about, as I do not think it should be a constant struggle or a fight for producers and families to be involved in raising healthy, wholesome, and delicious products for the world to consume.
