Thank you so much for choosing me as a recipient of this scholarship. I look forward to putting this money towards my studies and representing the Targeting Excellence Program this coming year!
My name is Carrie-Grace Coleman and I am a student at North Carolina State University pursuing a degree in Animal Science with a minor in Agricultural Business. When I first decided to go to NC State it was with the hopes of going to veterinary school, I was told throughout high school that if I wanted to have a job working with animals that this was the path I needed to take. Since coming to college I have learned of the many different options that are available in animal related careers, and I found my true passion lies in the food animal industry. It took me some time to figure out which species I would want to work with and how involved I would like to be in animal agriculture, I have had experience primarily with sheep, goats, beef cattle, and poultry on my family’s hobby farm but it wasn’t until my internship with Smithfield Hog Production that I found my true calling. I worked the past summer on a sow farm and took turns in both breeding and farrowing, here I learned that there is a need for swine industry professionals and an education on the swine industry as a whole. I am going back for a second year this summer to find out more about the different segments of the industry. When I graduate, I plan on becoming a manager in training for Smithfield and working through the different positions to become a service technician for sow farms in region. Eventually I would like to become a production director and a stronger advocate through experience for the swine industry.
