The question of “What are your future plans?” has always been a challenging one for me. Not because I lack the ideas or knowledge about the various career paths, but because I appreciate keeping my mind open to every opportunity. I was raised with the mindset to take every opportunity that comes my way and make the most of it. And so, much of my plans for the future revolve around that very philosophy. However, there are a few career paths and goals that I fully intend on pursuing for the betterment of agriculture and animal production. The first career path that I intend on pursuing is that of an agricultural consultant. To be a consultant in the field of agriculture working with numerous animal-related producers has always been a dream of mine. Through consultancy, I will have the highest probability of impacting hundreds if not thousands of lives. Additionally, having a career that involves constant problem solving and different challenges day after day would be ideal. Applying my knowledge and expertise towards my passion, agriculture, for the purpose of improving efficiency and sustainability amongst producers would be spectacular. Currently, I reside on the Southwestern Pa Regional Agricultural Council where I can assist in the development of agricultural communities within the region. And so, this experience has only reinforced my desire to pursue a role relative to consulting. The second career path of mine would be that of an entrepreneur. Having been born into an entrepreneurial spirited family, it’s only natural that I have the similar desire to start a business of my own. And so, through my entrepreneurship courses and involvement as an Ambassador/Farmer Relations employee for the startup Table Rock Markets, my desire to start my own business has never been greater. Currently, I am in the process of starting a business based on a new and improved system for production animal activity monitoring. To strengthen such an idea, I’ve decided to write my honors thesis on the advancements of technology within the animal production industry. All with hopes to become an expert in the field of technological advancement within agriculture and influence such change. Then finally, my last goal is to eventually return to my family’s business and farm, The SpringHouse, and assume the role of CEO. Once in such a position, my plans are to continue expanding our value-added dairy products to bolster farm profitability, expand our brand recognition and products farther into the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, and sustainably manage our very own banquet venue on the farm. In doing so, I want to grow our business by more than 500% and increase our product distribution to the entire Northeast region of America. Then and only then will I feel content. Because that farm, my home, is a place I hope to continue calling my home and a place I intend on raising my family. For it’s through that farming lifestyle that I hope to instill a love for agriculture in my children.
