I am honored to be accepting the Targeting Excellence 2021 Scholarship and to be representing NC State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. To the sponsors and members who made this possible, thank you for helping students like myself reach our professional dreams and supporting us in our endeavors. It truly means so much and makes me even more excited for my future. Go Pack!
I will be applying to veterinary school next year and will be pursuing a career in veterinary medicine. While I have said from a young age that this was my dream, over the years I have grown a massive respect for the profession yet also have been made aware of the hardships those in this profession go through. I have also become more open minded of the vast possibilities of a career in veterinary medicine and because of this I have strayed further away from being a small animal general practitioner in a clinic setting to consider other options in public health, mixed animal medicine, and research. I have developed a strong interest in nutrition and decided to add a Nutrition Science major in addition to my Animal Science major. I hope that this addition will bring me more insight into the unique dietary needs of various species and will allow me to pursue this interest further whether in the form of research or in industry. I did not grow up on a farm or in an agricultural family, but North Carolina State University has opened my eyes to a whole new world. From getting the experience of putting on a full arm glove and pulling a piglet out of a sow at the swine unit to bottle feeding calves at the dairy unit, I have found a love for these special animals and have a seed planted in my mind that I as a future veterinarian could make a difference in the One Health initiative, helping care for not just one patient, but for whole herds.
