Dear Targeting Excellence Committee, Currently, I am extremely busy with performing laboratory analysis for my M.S. thesis and enjoying every second of this process. My M.S. thesis, under the advisement of Dr. Eric van Huegten, has focused on the impact of essential fatty acids in subsequent reproduction. I anticipate completing my M.S. degree in Fall 2020 and pursue a Ph.D. program afterward. It is also at this time that I have begun to speak with multiple researchers from programs that are highly involved with the swine industry and nutrition research. When looking at potential options I wish to be part of a program that is strong in all aspects of swine nutrition both basic laboratory and applied commercial work. For it is from there that I desire a career that will allow me to incorporate both aspects to have my own impact on the hog industry. Throughout my time thus far in graduate school, I had the opportunity to meet multiple professionals and researchers working in both industry as well as academia. One common theme that I have taken away from meeting these various individuals is that if you are not passionate about what you are doing then life itself will not be fulfilling. In terms of career goals, I wish to follow a career that will allow me to come into contact with the animals under my care on a routine basis and work beside those who are as fervent in their profession as I am. That is why I believe that working for any commercial swine production companies will result in a very satisfying occupation. More importantly, I want a job that will entice me to be an advocate for food animal agriculture. Where ever my path takes me, one thing that I am for certain is that I will enjoy this opportunity to chase my interests. I believe having this freedom is what will be the most beneficial for me to nurture my own unique contribution to hog production whatever that may be. Thank you for your consideration, Garrin
