Thank you to everyone who supports the Targeting Excellence Scholarship! Without the support and dedication to the future of agriculture by individuals and companies like yourselves, myself and many other students would not be where we are today. I am confident in the future of agriculture and wish to see young people’s involvement in the agriculture industry continue; thanks to your support, I am confident that will happen!

Dear Scholarship Committee,

I am applying for the Targeting Excellence Scholarship as a student in the animal agriculture industry. I am currently a freshman at South Dakota State University, majoring in Animal Science with minors in Agricultural Business and Ranch Management. I am pursuing this degree so I can further dedicate myself to the beef industry and strive to work for the greater good of agriculture; receiving this scholarship would help me immensely in my journey towards my Animal Science degree. Pursuing higher education to serve the beef industry is the least I can do to repay those who have supported me on my journey to where I am today, both as a student and participant in the future of agriculture. I have shown cattle since Kindergarten in 4-H and FFA, both of which I served as President in the past, with multiple trips to the Minnesota State Fair and Gelbvieh Junior Nationals. I was blessed to be part of an amazing 4-H General Livestock Judging Team; we placed Reserve Champion at the Minnesota State Fair in 2017 and 2018 and Grand Champion Overall in 2019, earning three trips to National contests. At home on the farm, my responsibilities include record-keeping, cattle selection, calving, breeding, and creating feed plans, which have formed many of my core values, such as integrity and dependability. I also assist my county fair’s beef superintendents with weigh-in and stalling and the swine superintendent with show setup, paperwork, and clerking the show. Upon graduation from college, I plan to work either for a farm in a daily management and accounting position, or return to my family farm to continue the work I do now and expand the operation to be more profitable. My ultimate goal in life is to be a stay-at-home mom on the farm, raising God-fearing babies and high-quality cattle alongside my future husband. Along with that, one of my biggest aspirations is to continue to direct market beef, pork, and lamb to family and friends while expanding our customer base. Growing up on an 80-head cow-calf operation in Southeast Minnesota, I have been surrounded by cattle my whole life; ever since I was a child, I dreamt of working in the beef industry with the people who have become like an extension of my family. The people in the agriculture industry have played a large part in shaping me into the woman I am today, and I hope to be able to repay that in the future. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely, Josephine Jenson
