Thank you so much to the sponsors, state committee, and board of directors for selecting me as a recipient for a Targeting Excellence scholarship. The connections that I have made through Targeting Excellence events over the past few years have led to some of my strongest industry connections, all of which have undoubtedly impacted my graduate career. I am truly grateful to be part of such an encouraging and supporting industry.
My interest in a livestock production career, emphasizing pork production, first began through experiences stemmed from youth memberships in 4-H and FFA. I grew up on a small, diversified farm in west-central Minnesota and as I grew older, I developed a strong interest for the swine industry specifically.
In 2016, I received my Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota in Animal Science. During my time as an undergraduate student, I completed three separate internship experiences, each emphasizing swine production, nutrition, and a basic understanding for designing and conducting research trials. I have further developed the skills I obtained during my undergraduate experiences by continuing with the Animal Science M.S. program at the University of Minnesota and expect to complete my program in the spring of 2019. In my next educational opportunity, I have accepted a Ph.D. position focusing on applied swine nutrition and production with Kansas State University beginning in May 2019.
Once I have obtained my degrees, I hope to find myself in an applied swine nutrition position that allows me to engage with both producers and private members of the swine industry. I sincerely hope that this position will be challenging, yet fulfilling in the area of swine nutrition. Although I have gained a couple years of experience with research, I still maintain a strong interest to pursue a career emphasizing research and development, and the implementation of that research. I plan to impact and implement sustainable practices that will provide a healthy agricultural environment for generations to come, whether it is within pork production systems or private industry operations. Ultimately, I want to share my knowledge and experiences with those around me to the best of my abilities.
