Career Goals:

My current career goals are to finish my four years at Dordt with my animal science degree and to get accepted into vet school at Iowa State University. From there I want to become a large animal veterinarian with a focus on cattle. I want to travel to different farms in my area and create relationships with local farmers while I care for their animals. I would like to be able to properly diagnose livestock and find the correct treatment plans to get that animal healthy again with low stress on both the animal and the farmer. I want to help increase growth for beef producers, help them to raise healthy, safe, and happy cows and calves. To help them to find the best ways to raise their cattle in order to have healthy and efficient herds. I would like to find the best ways to benefit both the farmers that I work with as well as the cattle and other livestock that I am working with. If I decide not to go to vet school my backup plan is artificial insemination. I would love to learn how to do AI with cattle and could see myself working at a place such as Transova or for a big purebred Hereford breeder that I know. In this field I would want to help create stronger, healthier calves that have a good calving ease and birth weight and that will hopefully look like and do what the customer wanted. No matter what job I end up in in the agricultural world I know that I want to do something hands on and on the farm. I love working hard and facing new challenges every day. I also want to meet new people and learn from what other farmers can teach me. I also would like to own my own cow/calf farm similar to the one my grandpa owns that I have grown up working on where I would be breeding Angus and Angus cross cattle for both club calves and to be sold as feeders. By having my own farm operation I feel that I could better relate to farmers that I am working with in my career.
