Career Goals:

I am pursuing a Master’s degree in Dairy Nutrition, with the career goal of being an on-farm dairy nutritionist. My research interests lie in feeding systems that decrease emissions, the interactions between calf nutrition and long-term health, and nutritional strategies that decrease instances of ketosis and hypocalcemia post parturition. My interest in dairy nutrition stems from experiences on a cow-calf operation under a veterinarian and serving as a calf manager and assistant herdsman at a Holstein herd. I found the work stimulating and learned much about how feeding programs affect herd health. While attending The Ohio State University’s Agricultural Technical Institute, I took classes under Dr. Shaun Wellert focusing on dairy health, reproduction, and feeding systems. These classes opened my eyes to a potential career in dairy nutrition. The ultimate goal of any career or grad program I pursue is to find ways to make dairy farms more efficient, improve animal health and welfare, and reduce environmental impact. Feed is the largest cost on a dairy farm, so during these times of milk price volatility, decreasing costs is vital for farm survivability and feed has the potential to have the largest impact. Environmental concerns are probably the largest new issues for the dairy industry. In order to ensure the security of the industry, initiation on the part of producers will be vital. Last but not least, my main goal in any career or grad program is to improve animal welfare. The heifers and cows on our farms work hard for the betterment of mankind, so in turn, our responsibility is to see that they are healthy and live in a good environment. The sustainability of the dairy industry has had, and always have, a significant portion of my time and energy.
