Hi, my name is Sara Rountree. I will be a sophomore at Delaware Valley University this September, 2015. Only being a sophomore, I am not exactly positive where I want to go with my career, but do have a couple ideas in mind. Before college, I did not have much experience with larger animals but found them to be very interesting. Because of that, I entered college pursuing a Livestock Science and Management degree. After my fresh man year, I know that is the path that I want to stick with. I was able to get a lot of hands on experience as well as take a Livestock Career’s class where we were exposed to all the different types of careers that were available.
With that in mind, I have a couple ideas for where I would like to go with my career. I am very interested in large animal digestive systems and nutrition. I specifically like the ruminant digestive system so I could possibly want to take a path that leads me to beef cattle and beef production. I have also taken an interest in the swine industry this past year. I have not gotten much hand on experience with them yet, but have applied to a couple internships on swine farms. I am most interested in one in North Carolina where I would get to take care of the pigs from farrowing to slaughter and also get a look at a couple feed facilities. So as you can see, I am very interested in all aspects of the livestock industry and hope to narrow down my likes and dislikes in the next couple years to find the best livestock career for me.
